PMAY 2025: How to Apply for a Free or Subsidised Government House

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is India’s flagship housing programme with a mission to provide housing for all. It has two components: PMAY-Gramin (rural) and PMAY-Urban, each targeting different income groups with different types of support.

PMAY-Gramin (Rural): Who Gets What

Under PMAY-G, eligible rural families receive a direct grant to build a pucca (permanent) house:

  1. Check if your name is in the Awaiting List at pmayg.nic.in — enter your registration number or Aadhaar
  2. If your name is on the list, contact your Gram Panchayat — they manage the selection and application process
  3. You can also check the Permanent Wait List at pmayg.nic.in to see where you stand

Important: Under PMAY-G, the house must be registered in the name of the woman of the household, or jointly with her husband. If no woman exists in the household, it can be in the male’s name.

PMAY-Urban: Who Gets What

For urban areas, PMAY-U works differently — it primarily provides interest subsidies on home loans taken from banks:

How to Apply: PMAY-Urban

  1. Visit pmaymis.gov.in
  2. Click “Citizen Assessment” and select your category
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number
  4. Fill in personal, income, and property details
  5. Submit and note your application number
  6. For the credit-linked subsidy, approach your bank or housing finance company with this application number
