What is Ujjwala Yojana?

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a scheme that provides free LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. It was launched in 2016 and expanded as Ujjwala 2.0 in 2021.

Under the scheme, the government pays the security deposit (normally ₹1,500–₹2,000) for the LPG connection, and also provides the first refill cylinder free. A pressure regulator and connecting pipe are also provided at no cost.

✅ The connection is given in the woman's name. This is mandatory — the woman of the household is the primary beneficiary, not the male head of family.

Who is Eligible?

  • Adult woman (18+ years) from a BPL household
  • Must not already have an LPG connection in the household
  • Must have Aadhaar card and a bank account

Priority categories under Ujjwala 2.0:

  • SC/ST households
  • PMAY (Gramin) beneficiaries
  • AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) ration card holders
  • Forest dwellers
  • Most Backward Classes (MBC)
  • Tea and ex-tea garden workers
  • Migrants — can now apply in their current residence state

Not eligible if the household already has an LPG connection registered in any family member's name, or if the applicant already received an Ujjwala connection previously.

How to Apply

  1. Visit your nearest LPG distributor (gas agency)
Go to any Indane, HP Gas, or Bharat Gas agency near you. Ask for the Ujjwala Yojana application form (KYC form).
  2. Fill the KYC form
Provide your name, Aadhaar number, bank account details, and address. The connection will be in the woman's name.
  3. Submit documents
Submit Aadhaar card + bank passbook copy + ration card (or self-declaration of BPL status).
  4. Get connection approved
The gas agency verifies your documents and checks the Ujjwala database. Approval takes 3–7 working days.
  5. Receive your connection
You will receive: cylinder, pressure regulator, connecting pipe, and a booklet. First refill is free.

✅ You can also apply online at pmuy.gov.in — select your gas company (Indane/HP/Bharat), fill in the online form, and the nearest distributor will contact you. No need to visit the office first.

Documents Required

📄 Aadhaar Card (woman applicant) 📄 Bank Account Passbook 📄 Ration Card (AAY/BPL) 📄 BPL Self-Declaration (if no ration card) 📄 Passport size photo 📄 Mobile number

✅ Under Ujjwala 2.0, migrants only need to provide a self-declaration of address — they do not need to submit address proof documents. This makes it easy to apply even if you've moved to a new city.

LPG Subsidy — How It Works

After getting the connection, you pay the market price for each refill cylinder. The government then transfers a subsidy amount directly to your bank account within 1–2 days of delivery. This is called Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

  • Ujjwala beneficiaries get 12 subsidised cylinders per year
  • Subsidy amount varies — check the current rate on your gas company's website or app
  • Your bank account must be linked to Aadhaar to receive the subsidy

⚠️ If subsidy is not coming to your bank account: Check that your Aadhaar is linked to your bank account. Call your gas agency helpline or visit them with your passbook and Aadhaar card to fix the DBT linkage.

Check Your Application Status
